Monkstown LTC vs Blackrock

A fine evening in Blackrock but Monkstown LTC knocked out at semi-final stage

It was a game of two halves again in Blackrock on Saturday. Amy McGovern had a wonderful 7 – 6 victory in the No 1 Girls singles on the evening before which got us all excited as we knew Blackrock girls were particularly strong. However Blackrock certainly lived up to their reputation and played some great tennis to overcome the Monkstown LTC girls. Lara Sommerville was beaten 12 – 1 in the No 2 singles, Julia Healy and Aisling Walsh lost 10 – 3 in the No 1 doubles and Sarah McGee and Caoimhe Byrne were beaten 12 – 1 in the second doubles. It wasn’t that our girls played badly – it was really that Blackrock were just very strong so an emphatic 40 – 12 win for Blackrock in the girls.

Our boys played very well – Finlay McFadyen made his first appearance for the team and played beautiful tennis winning 11-2. John O’Mahony also played very well but lost by the same margin. All of the parents were commenting on the standard of both games which were enjoyed by all. The doubles were also excellent games. Harry Crossan and David Keane won their game 10-3 while Gary Kelly and Patrick Byrne had an excellent 7 – 6 win – just nicking it on the tie break – so well done to them all. So the boys won their match 30 – 22 but unfortunately it was not enough to turn the tide so we lost the overall match 62 – 42. Well done to Blackrock, but our team did us proud and an enjoyable evening was had by all!!

So Blackrock will now play Sandycove in the final which we are hosting on the 26th May (postponed from the 19thdue to the clash with the Heineken Cup and Champions League final). We are hoping to play our 3rd/4th place playoff vs Newtown Park next Sunday so that we can all come down to the final – I hope to also arrange some friendlies on the night if I can get a few extra courts.

Special General Meeting

A Special General Meeting was held in the Club on Wednesday 2^nd May 2012 to ratify our updated Constitution. This was passed unanimously by those present. The sub-committee that worked on this were: John Mark Downey, Terry O’Rourke, Mick Clancy and Pat Cowley. A big thank you to them, but especially to John Mark who, as Chairperson, had a huge input into this document.

Monkstown vs Sandycove

Monkstown Finish Runners Up in Pool A

A great fixture in Sandycove on Saturday evening, but their girls were just too strong on the night. Lara Sommerville moved up to No 1 singles and gave an excellent performance against very strong opposition. Sandycove won 9-4 but the quality of the tennis was very high. Aisling Walsh was persuaded to play No 2 singles and worked hard for her 2 games. Rachel Norton and Sarah McGee did well getting 4 games in the first doubles and Sarah Healy and Caoimhe Byrne got 2 games in the final game. So a strong 40 -12 win for Sandycove but some good performances from our girls.

In the boys, John O’Mahony had an excellent game against school tennis teammate Mark Cunningham. Mark won 8-5 but it was a great match. The No 2 match was even better with Harry Crossan winning the match for Monkstown 7-6 on the tiebreak, beating James Cronin. This was a great sporting match – a credit to both players. In the first doubles, David Keane and Patrick Byrne won their match 9-4 while Harry Shaw and Mark Foster (both of whom came to our rescue late in the day when we needed subs at short notice) put in a fantastic effort just getting pipped 7-6. So a narrow 27 – 25 win for the boys but an overall 65 – 39 win for Sandycove. This means we qualify as runners up in our section and will play an away semi final on May 12th. (We take a break for the bank holiday weekend.)

Monkstown LTC vs Bray

A Game of Two Halves

The second U14 fixture against Bray was split into two halves – the boys went ahead as scheduled on Saturday evening but due to a combination of communions, confirmations and Captain’s day, the girls played on Sunday evening. The boys played exceptionally well despite having two very tired Cuala players (David and Patrick) arriving virtually straight off the Gaelic pitches. John O’ Mahony won his singles 11-2 – a fine performance, Harry Crossan won 9-4, David Keane and Gary Kelly played very well on a first time outing together winning 10-3 and Patrick Byrne and Alex Boyne were in great form wining 11-2… So a strong 41-11 win for the boys.

The girls maybe suffered slightly from all the festivities on the previous day and struggled a bit to find their form. However, there were some excellent matches with most of them very close. Amy McGovern came up against strong opposition and lost 11-2. Lara Sommerville went into an early lead but was pegged back and overtaken to go down narrowly 8-5. Rachel Norton and Sarah McGee also had a close game just losing 8-5 while Julia Healy and Caoimhe Byrne had the closest match of the night but were just pipped 7-6. So a 34-18 win for Bray in the girls and they were really delighted.

The overall result then was a 59-45 win for Monkstown LTC - so very well done to all. Next match is against Sandycove on Saturday, which will probably decide the pool. Team list will be circulated in the next day or so.

Monkstown LTC Constitution

2012-04-19 Revised Rules Monkstown LTC v 8 pdf. Click on heading above to see the proposed changes to the Rules of the Club. As you may know, consideration of a motion to amend the Rules was adjourned at the AGM of the Club last November. In the meantime submissions have been received from members and so the Rules have been further amended. This is version 8 which will be put to a Special General Meeting in the Club on Wednesday 2^nd May at 8.00 p.m. Details of this, along with the Agenda and an Appendix giving a description of proposed changes, will be posted to all members.
