January 2016 – Junior Newsletter

Hi everyone welcome to another new year of junior tennis at Monkstown Tennis Club. As it is the start of a new year we are sending you out our annual plan which has all the key dates inside. We also think it is worth just setting out a summary of the events and how they work – mostly for the benefit of any new people so please feel free to ignore if you are already familiar with it!! I am also attaching the last newsletter – covering the summer which I think quite a few of you did not receive due to a technical hitch

We aim to have something for everybody in Monkstown LTC! We are about enjoying tennis at every level, making friends and supporting our teams. We are immensely proud of our juniors’ endeavours in so many fields –, their achievements in Opens, their participation as competitors and helpers in our own fun tournaments and their achievements in other sports. On the tennis side, most recently Julie Byrne was a finalist in the National senior indoor tournament and Conor Gannon won the u14 junior title – fantastic achievements and congratulations to them. Julie turned 18 during the year and from now on is officially a senior – but we will still very interested in her progress – she is a great role model for the young players to aspire to.

We are equally as proud of our young players who took part in our many internal events over the year and enjoyed the fun. Our aim is to encourage as many junior members as possible to play and enjoy the game at all levels.

We are lucky to have a group of coaches who work with children of all levels to develop them to their potential. We have group classes catering for all abilities   – just sign up in the office.  Based on interest and commitment, development squads are put together. In addition private coaching is available on a 1 to 1 or group basis – again just check with the office for availability

We try to keep our website as up to date as possible – log on to www.monkstownltc.com and click on the junior section and latest news to see what is going on and how our teams have been doing. In the past, we have had many reports written by our junior members. – about their trips as spectators to Wimbledon, the ATP Masters Finals, and their experiences as players on the National Squad and in competitions in clubs all over Ireland such as Mullingar, Irvinestown and Castlebar. We are trying to get this going again and welcome all contributions

We encourage you to get your children involved as much as possible. Brief details on the main types of leagues and events are also attached.

The three key dates for all junior members are as follows::

Junior Championship  –       18th to 24th July

Junior Handicaps –             4th to 8th July

Parent and Child –                 6th June

This year again we  want to try and make our two principal trips – to the Castlebar tournament in June and the Irvinestown tournament in August even bigger and better.  These trips are aimed at children age 12 and over who would be at least Stars and Stripes standard. (This is an interclub tournament with 12 players on each team aimed at children who do not have a top 50 Leinster tennis ranking). To do this we will need a number of parents to volunteer, so if you have a child who would like to come– please consider volunteering. It’s a great way to get to know people and great fun!! We will be doing some fundraising for these trips during the year starting with a tournament and cake sale on the 18th February so please come and support!

This year also we want to continue to develop and play in the various DLTC and Leinster junior leagues, following our significantly increased participation last year which the juniors really enjoyed. We are delighted that so many of our juniors play on the senior teams, but we think it is very good for them to play with their own age groups also. Again we will be looking for parents to look after teams so please if you have any time available we would be delighted to hear from you.

We would also be interested in any ideas or feedback you might have for us – please don’t hesitate to contact us.
