August 2011 News

August was again a very busy month for the junior section with supervised tennis with Carol Kelly very well supported. The highlight was the Fitzwilliam Irish Junior Championship in which 26 Monkstown LTC juniors were competing – a fantastic representation for the Club. Julie Byrne won the U14 Mixed Doubles and was a semi finalist in the Girls Doubles, which is a wonderful achievement – so many congratulations to her. Congratulations also to David Cullen who was a finalist in the U12 Mixed Doubles and also a semi-finalist in both the Boys Singles and Doubles. We also had nine quarterfinalists, so very good performances all around.

The other big junior tournament in the month was Donnybrook and once again we had some great performances. Rachel Hartnett won the U10 title, David Cullen and Sean O’Rourke were finalists, Harry Crossan, Jerome Doyle, Kate Grennan, David Keane and Siofra Watson were semi-finalists and we had 4 quarter finalists.

One other event worthy of note was that Rachel Norton and Sarah McGee – who have really come through from the Stars and Stripes – won the U12 Doubles at the Wexford Open, so very well done to them.

Many of our juniors featured strongly in our own Championship – I think we will need more veteran and family events in the future!! Sean O’Rourke is now the Men’s Champion and Jennifer Crotty is the Ladies’ Champion. They also both won doubles titles so many congratulations to them and to all the other juniors who competed so well and played such great tennis throughout the fortnight.

We have two teams currently competing in the DLTC U14 Leagues and both the boys and girls got off to a winning start. We are also hosting the U12 Stars and Stripes and have one win and one defeat so far. We have 26 children involved in this competition and are getting great support from the parents.

Monkstown LTC also hosted an U14 Day Cup with 8 teams competing. A great day was had by all – Monkstown LTC were runners up and a substantial sum of money was raised for GOAL also.

Finally, the Player of the Month for August was Richard Byrne.
