Our Tennis Trip to Brighton

Our coach organised a trip for his squad to Preston Lawn Tennis Club in Brighton during mid-term break. There were three Monkstown players amongst the travellers; Mark Earle, Harry Crossan and myself – Jack Gannon. The purpose of the visit was to play against local English players, get some coaching and organise a Davis Cup style tournament between the English and the Irish players.

After a very early start out of Dublin, we arrived at the tennis club just outside of Brighton and got started…

We met our opposition, warmed up and were then divided up into groups for coaching. After the morning session we broke for lunch and then started to play some Davis Cup type matches in the singles category. Harry and Mark’s team came first and my team came second so it was a good result for Ireland and for Monkstown!

We finished the tennis session late afternoon and all headed back to our hotels for a rest and clean up before meeting up for a nice Italian dinner in Brighton city centre that evening. After dinner, we walked down the very famous Brighton Pier landmark and went to the Arcade for some fun!

The next morning we had another early start and arrived at the Tennis Club at 9.30. After coaching and some games we started our Davis Cup Doubles competition. Harry and Mark played together and came third overall. I played with another squad member Max and we were delighted to come second overall – a great result all round!

After a prize-giving ceremony we said goodbye and thank you to our English hosts and headed for a quick lunch followed by another visit to the Arcade which was very popular with all the boys and some of us even won some cash! After that it was back to the airport for the flight home. I had a great trip and it was good to see how other kids coach and what their training sessions are like.
