On Friday 25th June Rachel McAuley, Aisling Cullen, Siofra Watson, Julie Ryan, Kate Grennan, Caoimhe O’Connor and me (Lara Sommerville) headed on our trip to Castlebar, Co. Mayo with Mary Catherine and Veronica.

After our 3 hour journey, we all arrived at our huge cottage where we were staying. Some of the girls had matches but I didn’t so I stayed a bit to unpack. Later I headed up to the club to support the girls. The tennis club is around 5 minutes away from our cottage and it was just built as the old one got vandalised. The club had a great view of all the courts and while watching the girls’ matches I also occupied myself by playing ping-pong which was a lot of crack for all of us. We had some great wins and unlucky defeats but all of us headed back to the cottage in high spirits to eat pizzas from Tesco followed by a pillow fight.

The next day Siofra and I had an early start as we were playing in the U12 Girls’ singles round robin. The conditions were very hard to play in because it was very windy. The other girls also had doubles and singles which they all played really well in. Siofra and I also had our doubles against the No. 1 seeds, unfortunately we lost but we put up a good fight and got 5 games out of them. After all our matches we had a trip to the playground and headed home. Dinner was take-away Chinese and after that we played murder in the dark.

On Sunday (which was just as windy as Saturday) I had my last match against Siofra. I lost and Siofra played really well. Kate and Aisling were playing Julie and Rachel in doubles. Julie and Rachel lost but it was close (6-4, 6-4). Kate and Aisling got through to the finals but sadly lost in a championship tie break.

Sunday was the grand opening of the new clubhouse and we all got to meet John Treacy who was an Irish Olympic medallist. After that we had a lot of fun on the bouncy castle which was there. Then they had the presentation and awards. Kate and Aisling were Runner Up in their doubles and Siofra won the Round Robin.and Catriona Ruane in an exhibition match. Catriona Ruane was the best tennis player produced by Connacht and while looking at the notice board we spotted that she had played Judy O’Shea a few times in years gone by……so there is a little bit of Monkstown LTC forever in Castlebar!
