2009 Junior Championships – Finals Day

On Saturday July 25th Monkstown LTC looked fabulous with the flower beds in full bloom for the highlight of the junior calendar – the Junior Championships. Preparations began early. Umpires’ chairs were wheeled out, a team of helpers was busy slicing and dicing food for the Baguette Bar, trophies were being polished and scores of supporters arrived to enjoy the tennis in the sun. And what great tennis it was! We witnessed some fantastic matches played by all age groups -from under 10s to under 18s- proudly watched by parents, grandparents, friends and, indeed, coaches.

Without a doubt one of the special highlights of the day was the presentation to Mary McDaid. Mary only recently retired after 20 years as Junior Day Manager to the club. Mary has been a friendly face and encouraging voice to at least 2 generations of junior tennis players who have enjoyed countless hours of carefree tennis under her watchful eye. Many of her longtime friends from the club came specially to this presentation to share their appreciation. Mary is someone who has given selflessly of her time for decades to junior tennis in Monkstown LTC.

And of course there was the speed of serve competition. This was run by Stephen in aid of the Tennis For GOAL fund. The competition was officially opened by John O’Shea who scored an impressive 88 mph. Then an orderly queue formed as everyone tried to beat the world record of 155 mph served by Andy Roddick. Congratulations to our two junior winners – Simon Cusack who scored 87 mph closely followed by Brian Horan on 86 mph. As always the real winners were the Children of Calcutta as we added to our ever growing Tennis for GOAL fund.

Meanwhile back in the clubhouse Orla, Jennifer, Edel and Fiona were kept busy running the Baguette Bar which ensured that the kids and their supporters had a healthy lunch. Afternoon tea was served at 3 and tables were laden with delicious home baked goods and lots of treats

And then it was time for the Mini Fun Event run by Stephen. It was enjoyable watching our budding under 8 tennis players taking part in this lovely finals day.

Then the day was rounded up with prize giving and speeches from Adrienne, Judy, Stephen and Carol our Lady Captain.

And now to the thank you list:

I would like to thank Adrienne and Will who are a wonderful team and to whom we owe the success of this event as their endless patience and sense of humour ensured that everything ran smoothly.

I would like to thank Judy for her incredible wealth of knowledge and the support she gives to the juniors.

I would like to thank our umpires who gave up their time to add to the atmosphere of the day. They included John Barry, Adam Craig, Craig Cusack, Carol Kelly, Karen MacKenna, Brian McDaid, Alan O’Mahony, Maeve O’Rourke, Aisling O’Rourke, Johnny O’Shea, Judy O’Shea, Stephen O’Shea, Kevin Polley, Helen Ryan, Anne Tweedy and Will Wilshere. No doubt our juniors will be umpiring matches in years to come.

Thanks also to our wonderful Junior Committee – all 12 of them! They are always busy in the background working on a junior event. Particular thanks to Orla and Jennifer who looked after the catering on the day and to Mary Catherine who produces all the colourful notices and assists with the website.

I wish to thank Seamus MacKenna for, once again, giving up his time and taking the incredible photographs capturing some very special moments.

Finally, thank you to Stephen for creating a dynamic and vibrant junior section of what is definitely the best club in Ireland.
