February News

The two main events in February were the Spring Matchplays and the Indoor Championships in Clontarf.  7 juniors qualified for the Leinster Matchplays – Rachel Hartnett, Gary Galvin and Matthew Earle U12, Lucy Byrne and Lily Lloyd U14, Julie Byrne U16 (who was pre-selected) and Jack Crossan U18 which was a great achievement for the club.  It is very difficult to qualify in Leinster so great credit is due to all involved.  In the Indoor Championships Julie Byrne won the U18 doubles and was in the final of the U16 girls singles which is a really outstanding result – many congratulations to her.

We have the Stars & Stripes U12 competition well underway and the Monkstown LTC team topped their pool which gives them a home semi final in two weeks time so very well done to them – lots of new faces on the team –great to see them doing so well against the other clubs.  There was also an inaugural U16 one day event hosted by Sandycove on Friday evening which was really successful – a great night.  The event was won by Shankill but our team did us proud – most of them part of the original U12 Stars & Stripes team of 3 or 4 years ago so great to see them carrying on.  We will now try and do a series of one night events which we think will work better for this age group.

Coming up we have the U12 League and we have entered a Class 1 boys and a Class 2 girls team. We have also entered one Class 1 team in U17– which is mixed.

We also had two Mid-term Fun Tournaments internally in the club which were well attended – over 20 competitors in each. We had some great tennis and almost €200 was raised for GOAL.

Orna McMorrow was the February Player of the Month. Finally our juniors were instrumental in the Winter League success with Sean O’Rourke and Simon Cusack on the men’s first team and Jennifer Crotty, Amy Ryan, Julie Byrne and Kate Grennan on the ladies first team both of which are in the finals on Sunday week. Also Elizabeth McGee helped the ladies 4th team gain promotion to Class 3. The men’s first team is now promoted to Class 2 and the ladies first team is now in Class 1 which is a really fantastic achievement. Very well done to all.
