January News

January is a relatively quiet month for the juniors regarding competition, but there is a lot of activity in the club and there are lots of events coming up.

The main event in February is the Leinster Spring Matchplays and we have a large number of juniors competing in Westwood during mid-term.

We also held a very productive interclub meeting on the Stars & Stripes in Sandycove last week and have agreed dates for the U12 and U14 competitions and an inaugural U16 one day event. These competitions will be contested by 8 local clubs. The U12 competition starts on Saturday 25th February (6-8pm) and runs until Easter. The U14 competition starts on Saturday 14th April and runs until the 19th May and Sandycove will host a one day U16 event on Friday 9th March. All clubs agreed that the eligibility rule should be to exclude the top 50 Tennis Ireland ranked players in all age groups as this is simple and clear.

Two Mid-term Fun Tournaments are being run in the club during mid-term – one for Under 12s and one for 12 and over. Good turnouts are expected.

The U12 Summer League is due to start at the end of March and we have entered one boys and one girls team.

Junior Box Matches have been organised and it is expected that these will begin this week and run through till after Easter.

There are a large number of juniors competing for the club on the men’s and women’s Winter League teams and they are performing really well which is great to see. It is of particular note that Julie Byrne and Kate Grennan are both playing on the ladies first team as this is the first year they are eligible – so the very best of luck to them.

Finally the January Player of the Month award went to two sisters –Eibhe and Isabella Kehoe so many congratulations to them.
