June 2011 News

Another very busy month for the juniors as the season gets into full swing. The U13 league teams did very well with both Class 1 and Class 2 teams getting to the finals – unfortunately Donnybrook came out on top in both finals but a great performance nonetheless. The U16 leagues are underway and Monkstown is doing very well so far.

In the Open tournaments once again Monkstown LTC performed very well. In the Bray Open Sean O’Rourke was in two U16 finals and Jack Gannon and Mark Earle were in the U12 doubles final. We also had 3 semi-finalists and 4 quarter finalists. In Carrickmines – which is probably the largest tournament – Conor Gannon was in the final of the U10 singles and Monkstown LTC children were in 7 semi-finals and 12 quarter finals. We also had a plate winner and plate finalist. It was great to see the very large number of children playing in and enjoying this tournament. Special mention to Adam McGovern who was in the plate final – just proves that kids who are enthusiastic and keep at it do really improve.

We also had the first of our two annual away trips for juniors – the Castlebar Open. Unfortunately our numbers were lower this year as it clashed with the end of Carrickmines and the two U13 finals, but what we lacked in quantity we made up for in quality!! All four U12 boys got into the semi-finals putting out the no 1 and 3 seeds along the way and Jack Gannon beat Mark Earle in the final. Jack and Mark also got to the U14 doubles final and the other 3 boys Harry Crossan, John O’ Mahony and David Keane all got to semi’s. Oisin Ferriter who plays on our class 1 team with Sean O’ Rourke is a local and he was in the U18 doubles final. Overall it was a really great trip and we plan to be back next year with bigger numbers.

Back in the club we have summer supervised tennis which is very well attended at the moment and the Junior Handicap event is underway which has a very good entry. The finals and barbecue are on this Friday. We are also looking into replicating the adult spring boxes format for juniors over the rest of the summer as a way of encouraging even greater participation to cover as wide a range of abilities as possible.

Finally junior of the month was Sadbh O’Kelly
