October 2011 News

The highlight of October was the two Under 14 League teams getting to the final of their respective Class 2 competitions. The finals were held in Greystones and there were around a dozen clubs involved in the various finals. Monkstown had the largest contingent of supporters there, so many thanks to all who came along on the day. The boys’ team – Fergus O’ Rourke, Jerome Doyle, David Cullen, Rex Lloyd, Kyle Murray and Mark Earle was up first against Clontarf. They played superbly and won all three matches, so many congratulations to them.

The girls’ team (Julie Byrne, Kate Grennan, Julie Ryan, Lucy Byrne, Rachel McAuley and Caoimhe O’Connor) faced Donnybrook in their final. Kate and Julie won but unfortunately the other two pairs faced much tougher opposition and despite some excellent performances we went down 2.1 in the end. Still it was a great achievement to be there and many congratulations to the team.

Congratulations also to all those who helped the teams along the way – Helen Ryan and Veronica Cullen managed it really well and got a large number of players involved in the qualifying rounds.

The U14 Stars and Stripes is well underway and Monkstown had 2 good wins in their opening two matches, so should qualify for the cup semis. Aoife Stokes and Jacqui Byrne are looking after the team so many thanks to them.

Congratulations to 7 of our juniors who qualified from the Leinster Matchplays (top 16 players in Leinster) – Rachel Hartnett and Gary Galvin at U12, Julie Ryan and Fergus O’Rourke at U14, Julie Byrne and Jack Crossan at U16 and Sean O’ Rourke at U18.

Finally at the Naas junior tournament it was great to see some new names on the notice board for getting into the quarters or better – well done to them all.

Rachel Hartnett – Runner up Under 11s Plate
