2010 Review

What a remarkable year 2010 was for our many juniors who participated in competitive Opens, Matchplays and Leagues, coaching, social matches, away trips and Tennis for GOAL fundraising events. We’ve had wonderful reports written by the juniors on these activities which have been displayed on the notice board and enjoyed by all. Here’s a re-cap of a few of the juniors’ achievements for 2010.

Competitions

Junior Opens

Our juniors clocked up 365 entries (in all age groups) in twenty two Opens. We are proud of our 25 Winners, 34 Runners up, 62 Semi Finalists and 76 Quarter Finalists.

The Junior Tennis Championships of Ireland (held in Fitzwilliam LTC) is the annual highlight of the Junior Open Calendar because it attracts the best juniors from the whole country and entry is only by way of qualification.

Thus, it is most impressive that 23 of our juniors suceeded in participating. 2010 was an outstanding year with four of our juniors winning their way through to the finals and producing our best results in Fitz since 1961! Congratulations are due to Fergus O’Rourke Winner U12 Doubles, Julie Byrne Winner U14 Doubles, Julie Ryan Runner-up U12 Singles & Doubles and Jerome Doyle Runner-up U12 Doubles. Well done to all of you on this great achievement!

Matchplays

Four Monkstown juniors qualified to represent Leinster in the National SpringMatchplays with all four finishing in the top 10. Well done to David Cullen, Julie Byrne, Jack Crossan and Sean O’Rourke. Congratulations also to those who took part in the Winter Matchplays and especially to our National finalists Sean O’Rourke who won the Under 16s and Julie Byrne, who finished in 3rd place in the U14s event.

Inter Pros’s

Jack Crossan was selected in August, to play for Leinster at the Inter-Provincial Championship in Castlebar. Congratulations to Jack and the U14 Team on bringing the cup home to Leinster.

Four Nations

We are also very proud of Julie Ryan who was selected to play for Ireland in the Four Nations which took place in Cardiff. This was a great honour for Julie and for our Club, as was the selection of Stephen O’Shea as coach for the U12 Irish team.

Templeogue Day Cup

Well done to our super Under 12 team represented by Lucy Byrne, Julie Ryan, Siofra Watson, David Cullen, Jerome Doyle and John O’Mahony. They competed against 11 other teams to bring the Templeogue Cup home to Monkstown for the first time in its 20 year history!

 Junior Leagues

For the second year in a row, we celebrated a remarkable double win with both our Class 1 and Class 2 Under 13 League teams. This success was soon followed with our Under 16s winning their league. Congratulations to all involved! Well done also to our juniors who took part in the Under 12 League and finished in 3rd place and to our semi finalists in the DLTC Under 17 League. Finally, congratulations all our juniors who very successfully represented their schools in the Leinster Primary and Secondary Schools Leagues.

 Senior Opens & Leagues

Many of our juniors enthusiastically participate in Senior Tournaments and Senior Leagues. Of these, the most notable was the Carrickmines Senior Open in July where they did themselves proud. Well done to Jennifer Crotty runner up in the Class 2 Ladies Singles and Sean O’Rourke runner up of the Class 2 Mens Doubles.

8 juniors also represented the club in the Senior Winter League. Overall, Monkstown won 42% of all matches played, with the juniors being successful in 62% of their games! On the ladies side, Amy Ryan and Jennifer Crotty won four out of four and five out of six matches respectively, on a team that reached the Class 2 playoffs.

11 juniors also played in the Senior Summer League and four of the young players involved – Olivia Crossan, Amy Ryan, Elizabeth McGee and Brian Cullen remained undefeated throughout the competition which was a great achievement by any standards!

Finally, well done to Sean O’Rourke, Simon Cusack, Oisin Ferriter, Amy Ryan, Jennifer Crotty, Elizabeth McGee, Ciara MacKenna and Olivia Crossan who participated in the 2010 adult Floodlight League. Well done especially to Amy and Jennifer members of the Ladies Class 2 team which has been promoted to Class 1 and we wish them Good Luck in the final!

A number of juniors also competed in the Club Senior Championships. 19 juniors reached quarter final stages and beyond. Two 16 year olds reached the Ladies Singles final – winner Amy Ryan and Jennifer Crotty runner up while 15 year old Sean O’Rourke was runner up in the Men’s Singles final. Well done to all of you on this great achievement!

Junior Handicaps

Our annual Handicap Tournament was a great success. A number of juniors entered the tournament for the first time and many of these reached the final stages. Our aim is for all juniors to play as much tennis as possible, make new friends and have fun. The level of sportsmanship and great tennis manners was a credit to all our juniors and their parents. Thank you to all the older juniors who helped umpire matches.

 Junior Championships

A great display of tennis took place throughout our Junior Championship week. We enjoyed a very special final’s day which included some great tennis, the healthy Baguette Bar, delicious afternoon tea, the Mini Fun Event, the Under 9 Leinster Squad Exhibition Event, the ‘Best Homemade Cake’ competition and the Speed of Serve Competition in aid of the Tennis for GOAL Fund. Congratulations to all those who reached finals day and also to Harry Crossan and Rachel McAuley who were awarded the 2010/2011 Juniors of the Year title. Well done also to Ben Gannon and Lara Sommerville who were awarded with Monkstown hoddies for their display of great sportsmanship and manners.

Stars & Stripes

Particular thanks to Catherine Keane for setting up and running the very successful and popular ‘Stars & Stripes Tournament for juniors who do not compete in the later stages of Opens. Congratulations to our many juniors who represented the club on the Under 12 and 14 teams and played against boys and girls from Sandycove, Glenageary, Glenalbyn, Shankill and Newtown Park. In addition, a fantastic  €700 was raised for Tennis for GOAL so well done to all the clubs involved and many thanks.

Fun Tournaments

Several fun tournaments were organised in MLTC for all ages and standard and include the February Mid Term Tournament, Easter, Halloween and Christmas Tournaments as well as our Over 13s Pizza & Tennis nights. These tournaments are always enjoyable as they involve lots of tennis, prizes and speeches by the ‘captain’ of the winning team.

Parent & Child Tournament

This is without doubt one of the most popular events on our junior social calendar. It is organised by Anne Tweedy and as always, her wonderful sense of humour ensures that the day is hugely enjoyable. Congratulations to all players and especially the recipients of the Fair Play AwardsScott Barron, Joe Gallagher & Gerry Byrne.

Supervised Easter & Summer Tennis

We are delighted to offer supervised tennis during Easter and also during the months of June, July and August. Thanks to our able team of Junior Day Managers and Junior Supervisors – Adrienne Cusack, Carol Kelly, Caroline Grace, Olivia Crossan, Alan O’Mahony, Craig Cusack and Adam Craig. Thanks also to the supervisors for organising events such as the weekly U10 & U12 Fun Tournaments, Fun Doubles for Teenagers and Teen Matchplays.

Tennis for GOAL

The Tennis for GOAL Fund continues to be a source of great pride for both Juniors and Parents alike. It is a very rewarding experience for our juniors to help the far less fortunate children in Calcutta. To date, an incredible €50,000 has been raised since the fund’s inception in 2006. The Tennis for GOAL Fund will go towards building eight multi-purpose centres in the Howrah settlements in Calcutta. The money which you have raised will affect and improve the lives of over 5,000 people. We look forward to issuing updates on how the Howrah project is progressing which we will post on our website and Tennis for GOAL notice board. Again, many thanks to all the parents who gave such support throughout the year.

Trips

2010 saw the continued development of warm contacts with tennis clubs throughout the four provinces. Year after year, MLTC juniors are invited and welcomed back to clubs such as Castlebar, Mullingar and Naas. Our juniors really enjoy and benefit from the overnight trips out of Dublin which, of course, could not happen without the support of volunteer parents who deserve a big thanks.

Visitors

Dublin born Fergus Murphy one of the top chair umpires working at events on the ATP tour was invited by Stephen to give a talk about his experiences as an umpire on the circuit. Fergus is a Castleknock player and has played many times in Monkstown. He has also played interpros with Stephen as a junior. Fergus has umpired the top players in the world including Federer, Nadal, Murray, Del Potro, Djokovic and Roddick. It was a terrific afternoon and the juniors were particularly impressive as they enthusiastically put interesting and intelligent questions to Fergus. The presentation was followed by pizza and the afternoon was enjoyed by both juniors and seniors.
