2011 Stars & Stripes U12 Autumn Tournament – Week 1

Monkstown LTC vs Shankill

A Great Evening For All

We were blessed with the fine weather in Monkstown LTC for the first round of the Autumn U12 Stars and Stripes – thankfully the weather forecasters got it wrong! Six matches in the main competition were scheduled against Shankill in Monkstown, with a further four friendly B matches played in Shankill and two internal friendlies in Monkstown LTC – so 26 Monkstown LTC children in total competing.

The first match was actually played on Friday evening with Monkstown LTC boys no 1 pairing Harry Crossan and David Keane playing David Doody and Alex Murphy from Shankill. It was a very entertaining game, but great net play from Harry in particular saw the Monkstown LTC pair come out on top 10-3. In the no 2 match, Patrick Byrne and Ben Gannon won 9-4 while no 3 pairing of Alex Boyne and Adam McGovern were just too strong for their opposition winning all 13 games. So a 32-7 victory for the boys.

Six months ago the very same six Monkstown LTC girls played the Shankill girls team and were heavily beaten. This time around it was very different. No 1 pair Rachel Hartnett and Grace Mary Doyle showed just how much they have improved over the summer coming out 10-3 winners in their game. No 2 pair of Rachel Norton and Sarah McGee (fresh from their great win in Wexford) also played really well winning their game 11-2. Finally, the last two Sarahs (a very popular name on the girls’ team!) – Healy and McAuley – also came out on top by 11 games to 2 in their match, so a 32-7 victory for the girls and a very convincing 64-14 win for Monkstown LTC overall.

In the friendly B games in Shankill, the two Monkstown LTC girls pairings of Clare Doyle and Emma Walsh and Caoimhe Byrne and Anna Foster both won 11-2 while in the boys, the first pairing of Greg O’Carroll and Mark Foster (Anna’s twin) won 12-1 while the second pair – Alex McGinn and Harry Shaw had a very close game going down 7-6 in the end. A most enjoyable evening for all.

Back in Monkstown LTC there were two final internal friendly matches – though the competition in the boys’ game in particular was fierce!! David Keane and Harry Crossan – having earned their points for the club the previous evening – were taking on Mark Earle and new boy Finlay McFadyen. It came down to the tie break and Mark and Finlay prevailed 14-12 so a real thriller! In the girls’ game Finlay’s sister Rosie – complete with face paint from her little sister’s party – and Sarah Lenin won their game – which was played in a very nice spirit – against Julie Ringrose and Anna Schwer 10-3.

Several pounds of buns and crisps and jugs of juice later -and another good hour of running around – all of the kids went home happy- I think!

Next match is against Glenageary at roughly the same times next Saturday with matches in both Glenageary and Monkstown LTC. Details to follow.
