2012 Stars & Stripes U12 Autumn Tournament – Final

Monkstown LTC vs Blackrock

Stars and Stripes Title retained in close Final

What a night it turned out to be!  If we thought the Ryder Cup was close last week we nearly matched it at the club on Friday night. There are 6 doubles games in the final and 5 of them went to 7-6.  Blackrock brought a fantastic contingent of supporters with them and we had huge home support too – including Adrienne, Stephen and Judy which was very good of them.  All in all, it was a really wonderful atmosphere so thanks to everybody who came down, helped out and contributed to the evening.

The girls were up first and No 1s Sarah Healy and Claire Doyle had a great 7-6 win.  No 2s Anna Foster and Lucy Coulter Smith had an equally thrilling match and were just beaten 7-6.  Our No 3’s Julie Ringrose and Anna Schwer looked to be in big trouble early on – down 5-1 but knowing the value of every game, hung in there and fought really hard losing just 7-6 in the end – a great performance.  So Blackrock won the girls’ match by 1 point – 20-19.

All up to the boys so and they did not disappoint!  No 1s Harry Shaw and Mark Foster mirrored our No 1 girls and won 7-6 in a close fought game.  Our No 3s Conor Duddy and Scott Ruttle also won 7-6 (with the added drama of the lights going out and having to move court!) but the stars of the night were No 2s Ben McCarthy and Oliver McGannon who chased down every ball to take their match 10-3.  So the boys won 24-15 and Monkstown LTC won the overall match 43-35.

Very well played to all the children and special thanks to Sarah McAuley, Rosie McFadyen, Alex Boyne and Ross McCabe who all contributed to the team victory in earlier rounds.

The presentation (a very noisy affair) was held immediately afterwards and we had a good contingent from the other matches come along also. Newtown Park won the shield beating Glenageary in the final and Leopardstown Meadowvale retained the boys’ cup with a very strong performance from their boys.  Glenageary won the girls’ cup – just ahead of Sandycove.  The teams all contributed prizes to the raffle which was held on the night in support of GOAL and it raised €400 which is a great result – so many thanks to all.

Special thanks to Anne Crossan for a wonderful display of old photos from previous Stars and Stripes, to Karen and Seamus MacKenna for putting together a fantastic DVD of previous photos which was playing throughout the evening, to Anne Ringrose for her exceptional help on the night, to Eileen Healy and Fionnuala Duddy for being such excellent team managers and last but certainly not least to the Monkstown LTC parents who brought the food, cheered on the kids, served teas and coffees throughout and cleaned up afterwards.  It’s the effort and goodwill that makes the club special I think.

The bad news is we will have to do it all again in the Spring!!!
