2011 Stars & Stripes U12 Autumn Tournament – Week 3

Monkstown LTC vs Blackrock

Monkstown LTC Shine in the Dark!

There was great excitement in Monkstown LTC as their final pool match against Blackrock was held on Friday night. With Glenageary almost out of sight at the top of the group, this match would determine who got the runner up spot. The girls were first up and it was always going to be tough, as Blackrock girls won the overall girls event last year. The aim was to get as many points on the board as possible and hope our boys would push on. No 1s Rachel Hartnett and Grace Mary Doyle got 4 points, Rachel Norton and Sarah McGee got 3 as did Sarah Healy and Sarah McAuley so it was 29 – 10 to Blackrock in the girls. They had done their bit, now it was up to the boys. Monkstown LTC had a 6 point advantage going into the match so the boys had to get 13 more points than Blackrock to put the team through

Harry Crossan and David Keane fought for every point in their game and managed to win all 13 games so the sides were level. Newcomer Finlay McFadyen and Adam McGovern then won their game 8 to 5 so it was all down to the last Monkstown LTC pair – Patrick Byrne and Alex Boyne. At this point it had really got very dark and despite the best efforts of several amateur electricians (!) and telephone assistance from Brian Kelly, there really was a problem with the lights and we just could not get them on. The four boys must have been eating loads of carrots because they were still managing to have long rallies and the line calling was truly miraculous! In the end Monkstown LTC came out on top by 12 games to 1 and so finished runners up in Pool A and will play in the cup semi-final next Saturday. Final match result was Monkstown 43 Blackrock 35.

So great excitement all around – but not the most exciting part of the night – no – that was reserved for the arrival of a full tin of oven fresh brownies from the McFadyen’s which almost caused a crowd incident! (There were plenty of other fantastic creations for the afters also -but it was the fact that these were still hot that was the draw). The only snag was we had failed to notice that one of the friendlies was still going ahead on court 5 in what really was pitch dark (5 all – deuce) – and there were only 2 brownies left!! All the children involved in the friendlies were very well behaved and showed great patience with the general chaos, so we will definitely get more organised games for them next week – court space was just difficult this week as Blackrock club championships were on.

We are also all fully convinced that this win inspired the Irish rugby team to do so well in their pool match on Saturday morning!!

Details of teams and venue for Saturday’s match will follow.
