2009 Stars & Stripes U12 Autumn Tournament – Week 1

Monkstown LTC vs Glenageary

Well – first week over and a great night was had by all. Glenageary were our first opponents and the girls got us off to a great start with the no 1 and 2 pairs both winning by ten games to three. Lucy Byrne and Siofra Watson were in great form at no 1 and Juliette Mills and Kate Doyle joined forces very successfully on their debut outing together. Sophie de Patoul and Caoimhe O Connor played an excellent match against a strong Glenageary pair but lost out narrowly by 8 games to 5. Overall score for the girls was Monkstown LTC 25 and Glenageary 14 so a great start and well done girls!!

We had two boys competitions running – the first group were strengthened by three of our best under 10 players – David Cullen, Mark Earle and Harry Crossan. Mark and Harry were first out – (well Orla was going out!) and gave a really top class performance coming out winners by 11 games to 2. John O Mahony and Kyle Murray had probably the best match of the night with really excellent tennis played by all four players. Glenageary just shaded it by winning the tie break – finishing with a brilliant volley on match point, Final score 7 6 to Glenageary. David Cullen and Jack Stokes almost won their match with a clean knock out – one of the Glenageary players was floored by a ball but recovered thankfully. David and Jack were in top form anyway, coming out winners by 11 games to 2. Final score for the boys was Monkstown LTC 28, Glenageary 11, so again a great start and well done boys.

The second boys competition was the hardest fought of the night with really good competitive matches all around, David Keane joined forces with Aaron Grogan who came to our rescue at short notice after Gary Galvin had to pull out. The pair came back from a 3 nil deficit to win 8 5 in a closely fought game. Sean Desmond joined forces with fellow Cuala teammate Jack Hartnett who was carrying a foot injury. The pair fought really hard and came out on top 7 games to 6. The final match was Gary Kelly and Patrick Byrne who ran up a 7 4 lead but a tenacious Glenageary pair pegged them back to 7 6 at the finish – another thriller. Final score was Monkstown LTC 22 Glenageary 17.

Many thanks to all the parents who helped out and all who came and supported to make the event such fun for everyone.
