Stars & Stripes U12 Spring Tournament – Final

Monkstown LTC make it Three in a Row!!

Great excitement again at the U12 final of the Stars and Stripes. It was a repeat of the final last time out where Monkstown LTC just edged out Blackrock – 5 of the 6 games last time out finished 7-6, and it proved to be just as close this time out. First up were the girls and Rosie McFadyen and Anna Foster got the team off to a great start winning their game 8-5 with a very solid performance. Our no 3’s Lucy Rice and Eva Rose Melvin who made such a great debut last week were up against much tougher opposition but hung on in to win 3 games which were to prove very valuable in the end. Our no 1s Julie Ringrose and Lucy Coulter Smith were delayed as Lucy was involved in a titanic struggle in Brookfield, but she got there hot off the court and the two girls played their hearts out and were only narrowly beaten 7-6. SO Blackrock won the girls side by 22 points to 17.

In the boys competition no 1s Mark Foster and Oliver McGannon were struggling early on and looked to be in big trouble against a strong Blackrock pair. However, they hung on in and narrowed the gap finishing 5-8 so first blood to Blackrock. The number 3 pairing of Scott Ruttle and Ross McCabe played very well winning their match by the same margin – 8-5 so it was all square. The key match turned out to be the boys no 2 doubles and once again Ben McCarthy put in an outstanding performance – ably assisted by his partner Conor Duddy who put away some great volleys. Ben and Conor won the match 10-3 meaning that Monkstown LTC won overall by the narrowest of margins – 40-38, so it turned on a single game!

I have to say there was a moment when we thought it was going to be 39 all and the pressure of trying to answer “so what do we do next” nearly got to me. I had decided to invent a rule that we play one championship tiebreak – 1 boy and 1 girl from each club – but thankfully it didn’t come to that.

We had fantastic support on the night  from all the parents and subs and also Carol, Mickey Mac and Stephen came along to cheer on the team so many thanks to all of them.

Very special thanks to Leopardstown who hosted the final and looked after us all so well on the night – they have a beautiful facility there.
