2010 Stars & Stripes U12 Spring Tournament – Week 1

Monkstown LTC vs Glenageary

A Great Start!

Well it was a lovely evening in Monkstown LTC and we had some great matches against our first opponents, Glenageary. The girls’ matches were very tight. Newcomers Rachel Norton and Julia Walsh were point for point and game for game, and were just edged out 7-6 in the end by the Glenageary pair but 6 valuable points earned. The second match - Sophie de Patoul and Ciara Galvin was almost a replica, again a very narrow 7-6 defeat, but great rallies. It was all up to the no1 pair of Lara Sommerville – one of only 2 players from last year’s squad – and newcomer Amy McGovern to see who would come out on top. This was certainly the best match in the girls competition with very good quality tennis. Lara and Amy fought really hard and won the match 8-5 giving the girls team victory by a single point – 20 -19 so very well done everybody.

The boys team is much more experienced, with all 6 players veterans of last year’s squad. This experience really showed with very strong performances all around. No 1 pairing of Harry Crossan and John O’Mahony were in brilliant form coming out 12-1 winners. The other two matches were closer – no 2 pairing of David Keane and Gary Galvin winning 9-4 and no 3 pairing of Jack Hartnett and Gary Kelly having a marathon match (catering staff had to hold plates of food in reserve) but coming out 10-3 winners in the end. Some very good play again and nice to see the players all having fun when the matches ended.

Many thanks to all who helped out on the night – it was really great to see the support and I think all of the parents – home and visitors enjoyed the evening.

Newtown Park and Sandycove also had big wins and at the moment we are in third place overall – but early days yet!! All to play for!
