Saturday the 9th of August saw the inaugural 'GOAL Mixed Senior/Junior Tournament'.

There was a great range of experience and a high level of tennis throughout the day. Despite that Saturday seeing flooding throughout the country, the weather somehow held off around the Monkstown area allowing for a very enjoyable day of tennis.

There was a great turnout on the day with a total of 8 teams, consisting of three males and three females, along with a number of spectators and volunteers who did so much to make the day a success.

The players were made up of a number of Monkstown Juniors and Seniors and a couple of guests including Robyn Johnstone from Newtownpark Avenue and Emma Doyle from Lansdowne/Fitzwilliam and it was great to see some guests joining the Monkstown members.

Each match consisted of 8 games and each team played three group games with just two qualifying for the final. Games were hard fought with many players warming up for the upcoming Club Championships.

Due to impending thunder, lightning and torrential rain the decision was taken to play a 'Champions Tie-Break' (tie-break up to 10 points) for the final. The final was edged by team 'Jankovic' made up of Sean O'Rourke, Paul O'Shea, Jennifer Crotty, Amy Ryan, Emma Doyle and Simon Balfe.

A short prize giving and a few words followed with the finalists and the winning team presented with prizes and GOAL t shirts to mark the occasion.

I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who helped with the organisation of the day (mainly Stephen O'Shea), prepared food, played and paid and anyone who supported the day by being in attendance. Also, of course a final thanks to GOAL for making the tournament happen.

Not only was this for a great cause, but it was also fantastic to see Juniors and Seniors mixing in a friendly tournament. It is a great opportunity for both groups alike and I certainly hope to see this tournament become a regular fixture at the club.

Congratulations to Jerome Doyle on winning the Boys Ladder Challenge.

The ladders have been updated after September's Ladder Challenge.

Fifteen juniors travelled to Mayo to take part in the Castlebar Junior Open on the last weekend in June. Well done to everyone who played.

Congratulations to Jack Crossan who won the Under 12 Boys Singles and to Julie Ryan, Harry Crossan, Oisin and Patrick McEnroe who reached the semi finals in their respective age groups.

Sincere thanks to Maria, Bridget, Colette, Ann and all in Castlebar Tennis Club for their hospitality (especially for the lifts to and from the Train Station). After playing tennis all day we headed back to our accommodation at the Lough Lannagh Holiday village where Paul and his Staff made sure we were refreshed and ready for the next day's action. Thank you to the Parents who looked after the Children for the weekend and to Stephen who organised everything.

Congratulations to Kate Lloyd, Amy Ryan & Sean O'Rourke on their selection for the U/14's Leinster Interpros to be held on Tuesday 12th & Wed 13th August in Mullingar.

The full Leinster team U/14's & U/16's will be in training on Tues 5th & Thurs 7th August in Monkstown with Stephen - so do pop down and have a look.
