Mens Summer League Round 1

The 1st team got off to a good start with a 3-2 win away to Glasnevin 1. Points were earned at 1st, 2nd and 3rd singles by Michael McMahon, Will Wilshere and Stephen O’Shea respectively. The team will be looking to build on this next week when they entertain Glenageary 1 on Saturday at 2 o’clock.

An extremely depleted 2nd team lost 5-0 to Templeogue 2. Former Monkstown junior champions Hugh Barnwell and Killian Polley were called upon but were unable to pick up any points. Hopefully we will see more of these Monkstown legends in the future.

A promising start from the 3rd team who managed to reverse the 2nd team’s scorline taking all 5 points on offer against Clontarf 5. The team is made up of a nice blend of youth and experience, with juniors Fergus O’Rourke and John O’Mahony playing along side Monkstown stalwarts Brian McDaid and Declan McAteer.

The 4th team also got off to a winning start, there were wins for last years mens captain Mark Aherne, team captain Daithi Roberts and the doubles partnership of Kevin O’Kelly and John Coburn. Unfortunately Ciaran Bolger suffered a hamstring injury ruling him out of next week’s fixture against Glenageary 3.

The 5th team racked up a fourth win for club on the men’s side beating Brookfield 3. The 3 points came from Pat Fahy, Gary Crowley and Hugh Aherne all playing singles. Niall O’Carroll picked up a back injury during his doubles match with partner Brendan Egan but despite this bravely fought on till the end of the match, sadly to no avail.

It was a baptism of fire for rookie captain Andrew O’Kelly whose 6th team went down 4-1 to Donnybrook 6 on Friday night. Monkstown’s win came from super sub Frank Kane, a point that could prove crucial come playoff time.  The enthusiasm that captain O’Kelly displays on and off the court can only bode well for this team’s future.
