Mens Summer League Round 3

Simon Cusack and Sean O’Rourke played well on the way to claiming a point for the 1st team in their doubles match against Westwood Clontarf 1. Unfortunately that was all there was to celebrate as the team lost 4-1 overall. They will be hoping to avoid relegation at the expense of one of two of their next opponents, Clontarf 1 or Naas 1.

The 2nd team continue to battle back after a bad start; wins in their last two matches could see them pinch a playoff spot. This week they enjoyed a 3-2 victory over Glenageary 2.

The 3rd team suffered their first loss of the campaign after an excellent start. David Lloyd 3 were 3-2 winners on Saturday and it looks like a three way battle for the two playoff spots between themselves, group leaders Ashbrook 1 and Monkstown 3.

The 4th team lost 3-2 to Templeogue 7. Mark Aherne winning his singles match and John Coburn and Kevin O’Kelly doing the business in the doubles. The team lies mid table with plenty still to play for as their final two matches are against opponents either level or on less points than they are.

The 5th team were victorious against Cellbridge 5. One of the highlights was sub David Fitzgerald producing a good performance to win his singles match in straight sets. The team eventually won 4-1 and continue to look in good shape for a playoff place.

So far the 6th team have endured what can only be described as a rollercoaster of emotions. Soundly beaten in the first round they came back with an excellent 5-0 victory in round 2. This week it was another defeat, 4-1 to Newtownpark 2. However, Monkstown 6 are not dead an buried yet! They have Donnybrook 6 in their sights, (a team who have yet to play the runaway group leaders Newtownpark 2). Two solid wins from their final two matches should be enough for the ‘town to reel them in. And with captain Andrew O’Kelly’s organisation which is carried out with military precision, they stand every chance.
