News & Events 14th December 2017

What a week of Christmas cheer! Starting last Sunday with the Mixed Turkey tournament, despite the freezing cold weather all participants had a most enjoyable afternoon. The three groups were well balanced, with the result that it wasn’t easy to win a Turkey! Niall and Denise put a huge amount of work into organizing the draw – prizes etc.  The following were lucky enough to be the prize winners.

  • Group 1 – Winners: Brian Byrne & Breege Clancy. Runners/up: Nessan Kelly & Helen Bunbury.
  • Group 2 – Winners: Andrew O’Kelly & Sonya Mahood. Runners/up: Michael McMorrow & Anne D’Alton
  • Group 3 – Winners: Greg Ryan & Denise Cooney. Runners/up: John Coburn & Fiona O’Sullivan.

Well done all! No event would be complete without food and boy did Nigella & Darina put on another display of delicious yummies – complemented with Mulled Wine!  Again our thanks ladies for your Trojan work in the kitchen.

As part of the prize giving, Eric Cooney was presented with a gift on behalf of the members in gratitude for the beautiful Championship / Handicap Album he produced. What memories you have captured for all of us to view.

Just a reminder from Niall & Denise that the signup sheet for Winter League is on the Notice Board.

CLUB NIGHT: Jonathan will host Club Night tonight…it’s the last one before Christmas –  so wrap up and pop down, thanks Jonathan. The next Club Night will be on Thursday 4th January.

LADIES MORNING: As part of the Christmas cheer, the Ladies Morning Committee (Sarah Jane, Aislinn,  Anne  and  Helen) laid on Coffee & Mince Pies for all lady members to celebrate the traditional presentation to our Lady Captain of last year Deirdre Hornshaw. Breege Clancy made the presentation and both Breege & Deirdre made super speeches.  Eric Cooney again selected some beautiful photos which were made into an album for Deirdre.

As mentioned last week , the Ladies Committee selected the Special Needs children who come down every Thursday morning to be coached by Stephen, to benefit from the € 500.00 they have donated form the Charity League & Wednesday morning coffee. The children attended yesterday’s presentation along with the School Principal of St Joseph’s, Padraic Fay, who said a lovely few words in gratitude to the club for allowing the facilities to be used and to Stephen for giving of his time with such enthusiasm. He maintained the children benefit to an enormous degree. Again a big “Thank You” to the ladies Committee for all your hard work & thoughtfulness. Ladies Morning will not be held on 20th / 27 th Dec or 3rd Jan.

JUNIORS: The National Matchplays were played last weekend and Monkstown had four representatives in various age groups. Congratulations to Conor who won the U/16 event…wow, what a super result Conor! Charlie competed in the U/14 event and Scott Barron & Sarah Ruttle played in the U/12 event, to qualify alone was a huge achievement and all three of you did yourselves proud. They’ve all qualified along with Josh for the National Indoor Championships to be played after Christmas. Talking of Josh, he had some exciting week last week when he played in the Ten – Pro – Global Junior Tournament event  at Nadal’s Academy in Majorca. He said the facilities were amazing and he met the man himself a few times, along with Carlos Moya and Mark Lopez. There were 400 kids from 37 countries from U/10’s up to U/15’s. Josh did really well in the U/15 event finishing 6th, beating guys from Holland, Eastern Europe and Switzerland.  What an experience Josh, lucky you!
