News & Events 28th June 2018

What a week it’s been for Monkstown, starting with Julie Byrne winning the Irish Close Ladies Singles title with Conor Gannon just being pipped in the Men’s singles final. A super achievement for you both and for the Club.

What about the Ladies League teams? Five Teams in the playoffs, with four teams winning through to the Semi-finals and the 1st & 3rd teams making it to the Finals on Saturday which are in Greystones, commencing at 10am. All five teams gained promotion to a higher Class with the 1st team joining our Men in Class 1. Congratulations to the team Captains:- Helen, Carmel, Carol, Ursula and Anne Marie for your commitment. Thanks to Stephen for coaching the teams on a weekly basis. Although the Men didn’t qualify for any playoffs none were demoted and the 1st team were only pipped by 1 point to get to the semi-final!  Well done Niall and Denise for such good team selection! Do try and come to support the teams in the finals.

I don’t think you need to be reminded of what the next event is the Handicaps. There are entry forms everywhere (including clicking Senior Handicaps 2018) Niall and Denise have put a special effort into getting members to enter, the deadline date is Saturday next 30th. The courts will be booked Mon – Fri from 7pm – 10pm so that might be another reason to get a game by entering the Handicaps. The sign-up sheets for Handicap match management and catering are up on the notice board. There is also a sign-up sheet for the BBQ and Handicaps prize giving (on 21st June) is also on the board.

Club Night tonight will be hosted by Robert Sheehan, a beautiful clear, balmy night in the offing, so pop down & enjoy!

Ladies Morning is put on hold for the summer months, the Ladies Morning Committee hosted the Final of the 5 Mile League last Sunday and as always had a lovely display of food. Thanks to Sarah Jane, Helen, Caroline and Anne for all the hard work you put in for the Ladies!

JUNIORS:   The Junior Championships will be held next week, best of luck to all who’ve entered. Adrienne will be running it, so make sure you know your time! It’s great to see so many of our Juniors on the ‘circuit’ playing in Open Tournaments, Carrickmines last week, Lansdowne this week  and  Naas next week. Conor Gannon was playing in an ITF event in Belfast this week. He was very unlucky to draw the No 1 seed, but put up a super performance only losing 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5). Stephen completes his first tennis camp this week, the following are the dates for the rest of the Summer:-  CAMP 2: 9th – 13th July, CAMP 3: 23rd – 27th July, CAMP 4: 30th July – 3rd August, CAMP 5: 7th –   10th August and CAMP 6: 20th – 24th August. Signup sheets on the Notice Board or you can email the details to Judy. Another of our junior members who has been hitting the dizzy heights is Sarah H. A hugely talented athlete, she has been creating records all year and at just 17 she is the fastest U/18 schoolgirl in the world over 1,500m. Sonia O’Sullivan wrote a superb article on Sarah in the Irish Times the other day which is on the Notice Board, really worth reading.
