News & Events 3rd August 2017

Another busy week! Well done Greg & Deirdre! The Handicap tournament was a great success and all the work you put into it paid off. Finals Day was a super day, with some nail biting matches! The atmosphere was so welcoming, with three generations of many families here. It was also nice to see our Life Member Sean Mallon making such an effort to come down & watch the finals.
Thanks to everyone who brought down goodies for afternoon tea, as there was quite a number of sandwiches and cakes left over the girls decided to bring the food down to the local Hostel in Dun Laoghaire, a lovely gesture. Finals Day wouldn’t be the same without Dee and her Ice Cream Wafers! Thank you so much Dee, adults & children alike adored them!
On the social side of the event Margaret & Breege did an equally great job organizing the catering for the 10 days, culminating with the BBQ on Saturday night which was a huge success. A lot of work involved but well worth it, weren’t the Steaks just delicious, don’t know how you do it Colin!
Now to the Club Championships which are just around the corner! Completed entry forms must be with Judy (office/home) by next Sunday 6th. If it’s not convenient for you to pop down with your form, email her your details and she’ll enter you.
The ‘At Home’ is on Saturday 26th August – VENUE: Killiney Golf Club. Put it in your diary now!
Congrats to Harry Crossan & Kevin Wylde on winning the Doubles event at the Ashbrooke Open last week – great win guys!
CLUB NIGHT: Club Night is back in action again tonight – with Jonathan (surprise surprise!!) hosting. Do pop down and get a bit of practice in for the Championships!

JUNIORS: Congrats to Conor for getting a wild card to play in the ITF tournament in Dundalk last week. He was very unlucky to draw a seed in the 1st round – just lost out after a tough match. Shankill is the venue this week for those on the circuit – good luck to Charlie Mc & Scott.
There are just 2 Tennis camps left before “back to school” time! Stephen’s last camp is next week – Tuesday 8th – Friday 11th August. Adrienne is running a camp form Monday 14th – Thursday 17th Aug. If you want Judy to register you for either camp just email her.
We had two Irish sporting heroes on court last weekend – our own Garry had a hit with his dad Niall on Saturday after the Handicap finals – then on Sunday we welcomed Ken Doherty and his son Christian having a hit with the 2 Scott Barrons!

Ciara Mac Kenna has been selected to play for an All-Ireland Gaelic Football Team to play Japan on Saturday next as a support match to the Dublin v Monaghan game. Congrats Ciara.
What can we say about Sarah Healy! A Gold Medal winner in the 1,500 meters race at the 2017 European Youth Olympics in Hungary, ran in a personal best to boot – 4mins 19.85…WOW!
To finish this week, there was an evening of tennis and happy memories yesterday to wish ‘Good Luck’ to David Cullen & Fergus O’Ruairc as they embark on their respective scholarships to the States over the next few weeks. Stephen organised 18 of our top players to come down and show their skills, completing the evening with David & Fergus playing a championship tie-break. We were also gathered to pay tribute to our dearly missed member Veronica who passed away so recently.
We were honoured that Peter & the family Philip, Aisling & Suzanne (Brian is in Brussels) came down. Stephen said a lovely few words and we presented Peter with a gift to remember Veronica. Thank you to all the members who came down, it made for lovely atmosphere that you’ll only find in Monkstown Tennis Club.
