News & Events 6th June 2019

Our No. 1 men’s player, Scott Barron created history last weekend when he spearheaded Ireland’s win at The Potter Cup in Barcelona. The Potter Cup is the World Championships over 45 event for tennis playing nations. The team was unseeded and came through the draw with wins against the US (4-3), Spain (5-2) and France (5-2) in the Final. Scott played number 1 singles in all ties, winning all his matches. The US team included Mikael Pernfors, who reached the Final of the French Open in 1986 (beaten by Ivan Lendl), reached a career high world ranking of 10 and represented Sweden in a Davis Cup Final. Scott was joined on the Irish team by, among others, Ross Niland, a brother of our own Gina! This is very much a first for Ireland and to win on the clay in Barcelona against tennis powerhouses like the US, Spain and France is a phenomenal achievement. Well done Scott!

Conor (Gannon) had a great run in the Senior Open played on clay in Naas last week. He reached the Final, beating a Davis Cup player in the process. Great performance Conor. He heads off to The Netherlands on Sunday but will play league for us tomorrow night against Fitzwilliam 1st (away) at 7.30. Should be a cracker!

The summer league is reaching its final round of matches, three of the Ladies teams won this week (the men had the Bank Holiday weekend off). The 4th and 8th teams still remain unbeaten, the 6th team also registered a win, well done all round. Very best of luck to all the Ladies teams as they play their last league match next week – the guys have two matches left so come on lads and give it your all!

Club Night: Club night tonight is being hosted by our vice president Susie Kennelly.  Susie will have you all on your toes with lots of tennis and chat!
