Monkstown trio on hot streaks at home and abroad!
What a year for the leading lights in Monkstown LTC! Our reigning Club Champions, Conor Gannon and Julie Byrne, achieved career-best honours in 2018, in the process proving their undoubted class on the domestic and international stages. Significant success also for Scott Barron, who has earned international honours at Under 12s in the past year.
Conor has had a fantastic nine months. He was crowned 2018 Under 16s National Champion at Fitzwilliam in August, justifying his billing as the top seed. He added the Mixed Doubles title for good measure at the venue of his first National Junior title (Under 12 singles in 2014). Conor finished the year by winning the Under 18s National Indoor title at Westwood Leopardstown. Conor was in top form that week, winning through the qualifiers before overcoming the number 1 and 3 seeds en route to picking up the title. To top it off he went through the tournament without dropping a set in his five matches.
Conor’s international stock rose considerably when he won the ITF Grade 5 tournament in Stavanger, Norway in February.

In her first year as a senior player, Julie displayed enormous courage during what was an incredibly difficult summer for the Byrne/Gunning families. Those who were present at Donnybrook – where she won the Irish Close Championship – and at Carrickmines, where she reached the Semi Final of the ITF Irish Open event, bore witness to a player and person of great character and mental toughness. Julie’s sojourn at Northwestern University in Illinois is clearly reaping benefits for her tennis career. We wish her continued success in the US and look forward to seeing her in action in Monkstown again over the Summer.
Scott, who is part of the National Tennis Academy, has progressed really well in recent months. In January he represented Ireland at the Tennis Europe Under 12s Winter Cup in the Czech Republic and in February he won the Ten Pro Dutch Bowl in Arnhem, The Netherlands.
Brilliant stuff Scott!
