Leinster win 2019 Senior InterPros at Monkstown!

What an exciting two days of top class tennis we had at Monkstown for the 2019 Interpros!

Led from the front by the ever-courageous and tenacious Julie Byrne, Leinster re-captured the Senior InterPro title in what was a nail-biting finale against a strong Ulster side. With both Leinster and Ulster having recorded comprehensive wins against Connacht and Munster it was down to the last tie to decide the 2019 champions. Leinster needed to win three of their six matches against Ulster to win the series and that is exactly what they achieved with Julie’s titanic effort against the full time professional, Karola Bejenaru, representing Ulster, the highlight of Saturday’s action. Cheered on by the band of vocal Monkstown supporters Julie showed her customary grit and determination to hold out for a three set win. It was then left to Leinster’s Mens Doubles pairing of Ciaran Fitzgerald and Ireland’s number one, Simon Carr, to secure that vital third point and to claim the title for Leinster.

It was also great to see Fergus O’Ruairc, who played some great tennis in the green of Connacht and was cheered on by the home support whenever he took to the courts.

A huge thank you to all who made it possible for Monkstown to host the InterPros. From the catering team in the kitchens, to the grounds team who made the club look so impressive, the ballkids who were fantastic throughout and to all of the members who took the time to watch the great tennis on view.

A proud weekend for all involved with Monkstown.
