DAVIS  CUP  UPDATE  FROM  STEPHEN

What a fantastic weekend of top quality tennis we were treated to in Limerick last Saturday and Sunday.

Our own Conor Gannon and Conor Niland did us proud on and off the court in representing Ireland with great heart, class and passion as they took on a world class Austrian team in front of packed houses at UL across the two days of competition.

It was fantastic to see so many Monkstown members of all ages filling the stands and cheering on the Irish team and we commend both Conors and their teammates in giving so much of their time to the young fans  - in particular in signing autographs and posing for photos before and after the matches.

For those who couldn't make it down to Limerick, there was the consolation of watching the matches live on Premier Sports.

The tennis was from the top drawer, with the 2020 US Open Champion and former world number 3, Dominic Thiem, leading the billing.

After wins for Thiem and world number 40 Sebastien Ofner on day one, Ireland had to win the doubles match on Sunday morning to stay in the tie.

Conor Gannon, making his home debut in Davis Cup tennis, partnered with Dave O'Hare against an Austrian pair who are both ranked inside the world's top 40 on the ATP doubles rankings.  Conor grew into the match and he and Dave were really unlucky to lose a tight second set - and the match - against an inspired Austrian pair.

We are so proud of Conor's development, from a beginner on our Junior programme, right through to the US college system and now to Davis Cup tennis.  The new posters on our noticeboards (and attached) give our members a sense of the journey that Conor and ,indeed, all of our junior players make from the time they first step on to the courts in Monkstown.

Well done again to Team Ireland and a special well done to our two Conors.

 Stephen

RUSHBROOKE JUNIORS VISIT TO MONKSTOWN

On Saturday January 20th we welcomed a 10 strong U10 team from Rushbrooke LTC in Cork. On the Monkstown team we had:

Ronan Carney (captain)
Jessie Woods

Ciara O’Shea

Michael Carney
Darragh O’Sullivan
Sam Carney
Daniel Carney
Harry Craig
Zach O’Rourke
Tom Langford
Richie Kennedy

Similar to our own U10s Rushbrooke have a very strong group so the boys and girls had the opportunity to play many competitive games of singles and doubles on the Saturday. Unfortunately our plans to play on the Sunday were stymied by the weather. Regardless it was a great day. Whilst scores weren’t kept our Captain Ronan is confident it was a win for Monkstown. It was another great opportunity for the kids to deepen the great bond they already have and make new friends so when they’re out playing Junior Open tournaments they’re never short of someone to hang around with. Many thanks to Stephen for making everyone feel so welcome and to all the parents for looking after our guests so well. We hope this will be a regular fixture for many years to come!

 Thanks,  Rob Kennedy
